Conditional Monte Carlo Gradient Estimation in Economic Design of Control Limits

چکیده
A major impediment to practitioner acceptance of the economic design approach to control charts is the complicated nature of the underlying optimization problem even under standard process assumptions. The economic approach to determining the optimal control limits requires estimating the derivatives of performance curves that are typically obtained via simulation. For this gradient estimation problem, finite difference estimators can be very inefficient, so we present an alternative approach based on smoothed perturbation analysis (SPA), also known as conditional Monte Carlo. Numerical results and consequent design insights obtained for the X̄-chart, the EWMA chart and the Bayes chart indicate that the SPA gradient estimators are significantly more efficient than the corresponding finite difference estimators.

The increasing penetration of renewable energy results in changing the traditional power system planning and operation tools. As the generated power by the renewable energy resources are probabilistically changed, the certain power system analysis tolls cannot be applied in this case. Probabilistic optimal power flow is one of the most useful tools regarding the power system analysis in presen...
متن کاملConditional Simulation: Practical Application for Sampling Design Optimization
Detailed spatial models generated by conditional simulation provide a powerful tool for case-specific optimization of sampling designs. The entire process of sampling, estimation, and decision can be simulated on such a model by a Monte-Carlo approach. Optimization can be based on economic functions or on decision quality constraints rather than simple minimization of estimation variance. Effic...
